Breakfast with Solomon - Proverbs 30:1

PROVERBS 30:1

"The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, the oracle. The man declares to Ithiel, to Ithiel and Ucal."

the oracle: This is the Hebrew word for burden or load. The person whom God selected to carry His message had an extra heavy load – especially because it was usually a word of rebuke; a word that would not be received well. This oracle was a spiritual burden, a soul burden, and a physical burden. You could not refuse to say what God had put on your heart. You carried the burden of the Lord, and it weighed on you until you unloaded it on His people. Jeremiah says that it was like fire in his bones. He tried to shut it up within him but he was unable. When God has chosen you to be a spokesman for Him, you carry a burden. And that burden must be delivered to the right people and unloaded.

Agur: this name means gathered

Jakeh: this name means blameless

Ithiel: this name means God is with me

Ucal: this name means devoured

This was a message from a prophet of God – one carrying the message from the Lord. This was a message to two people: Ithiel: God is with me and Ucal: devoured. This was a message from Agur, son of Jakeh: gathered blameless. This would potentially translate out as a message from God to two kinds of people: those whom God is clearly with and those who have been devoured by life. It comes from God through His specific servant who wants to communicate that He wants all people to know that they can be gathered to Him (God) in a blameless fashion through the son that He will be offering for their sins.

The first part of the oracle or burden from the Lord is that God has a son who will allow his people to be gathered blameless in His presence – those whom God is clearly with and those who have been devoured by life and by the choices that they made.

The Jews might see this proverb about the son to be about them -- gathered blameless in the presence of God; those who walk with God and those who have been devoured by life. His people will clearly be called sons of God, but I think this points to its ultimate fulfillment in the true and only begotten Son of God, Jesus the Christ, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.
