Breakfast with Solomon - Proverbs 20:12

"The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the Lord has made both of them"

hearing

This is the Hebrew word sama which means to hear or to listen.

seeing

This is the Hebrew word raa which means to see, to look at, to inspect.

made

This is the Hebrew word asa which means do or make.

The impact of this verse is not in the definition of the various words but in the import of what is being said and what is left out. Solomon wants us to focus our attention on two God-given gifts that are available to the young learner: the listening ear and the seeing eye. He is really saying that since God has given them, they should be used more extensively.

Notice that he does not say that the mouth has been given by the Lord. He is saying that the wise person should focus on these two gifts from God-seeing and listening. When in doubt, look and listen more.

The previous verse is about deeds being the distinguishing factor in a young person's life. Then Solomon adds that it should also be how well they listen and observe.

Make today a day of listening and observing rather than looking for places to comment and solve.

Until tomorrow,

Gil Stieglitz
