"There is a kind who is pure in his own eyes, yet is not washed from his filthiness"
kind
This is the Hebrew word dor which means period, generation, kind. In this case, it is a grouping of people who are affected by culture, upbringing, internal choices, and desires. They have identifiable features that allow them to be grouped. They are never wrong, and they just keep plunging into more and more selfish and unethical decisions.
pure
This is the Hebrew word tahor which means clean, pure. This is the main idea or behavior that types this identifiable group. They do not recognize themselves as having committed anything wrong. If something wrong takes place, it was not their fault. They were deceived or coerced. They have a short memory about their actions except the praiseworthy ones. They sanctify their own choices and actions. They seem incapable of realizing that they did wrong.
Who is this type of person? It is not the hardened criminal who hides their wrongdoing. It is the person who lives for the moment and does whatever they want in that moment. From their point of view, life is often a series of isolated adventures in which as soon as one is finished, it is forgotten for the most part. If there was sin in that past event, then it is corralled by the past.
yet is not washed from their filthiness
Notice that they this type of person is not big on the discipline of confession. In Solomon's day the cleansing from sin meant the slaughter of an innocent animal and the open confession of one's sins. This type of person does not do this.
Are you this type of person? When was the last time that you allowed the Lord to comb through your life and reveal your sins? Do you regularly allow God to review your day with you, pointing out where you were not honest or were rude or were angry?
I recommend that we avoid becoming this type of person by taking a few minutes at the end of each day and go through the seven deadly sins in our mind and allow God to point out where we may have committed that sin. If He points out that we have sinned against Him or others, then confess that to Him and ask for forgiveness for that sin based upon the death of Christ on the cross for your sins.
