The key here is to understand this as talking about changing the family legacy. Each person can change their family legacy by their actions. If they invite sin to be a part of their lives, they create a sinful stream in their lives. If they act out of the obedience of faith to be loving and generous and giving, they will also create a legacy.
When you trouble your own house, you change the destiny of the people who come after you. This proverb reminds us that the decisions that we make do not only effect us, they effect all of our progeny: our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. It is so easy to be in the pursuit of selfishness and forget that we are troubling our children when we do.
You turn what could be kings into servants. Be careful what you choose and pursue; it could change everything.
