Breakfast with Solomon - Proverbs 5:8

Proverbs 5:8

"Keep your way far from her and do not go near the door of her house"

This one verse is the command in this whole section on dealing with lust, adultery, fornication, and prostitution. Don't be anywhere near her or her dwelling place. Lust is a sin of proximity. All young men will feel it, but they must not act upon the opportunities or they will destroy their future. The next few verses of Proverbs 5 discuss the consequences of giving in to the momentary delight of unbridled lust.

This is not a sin which you get strong enough to resist. Get away from her. Don't go near to her door. What is really clear is that one doesn't beat lust, one flees from it. (2 Timothy 2:22) A young man is supposed to be somewhere else doing something else.

This verse is the sum total of the commanded action to beat lust and its many helpers. Don't think that this is not significant. The battle with lust is won or lost long before one even feels the battle intensively. It is won when you plan out your day. It is won when you choose the route you will take home. It is won when you decide where to spend your free time. It is won or lost when you decide if you will go by her house.

The next few verses of the Proverb discuss the ultimate future of those who cannot control their lust; there is a groaning at the latter end. One is trying to satisfy the fire of lust and these young men think they have succeeded, but they are destroying their potential future. They are following the impulses of lust rather than strengthening the wonder of married love and family. There will be a time when the fires of lust will burn lower, and the connection with family will be what sustains and gives life meaning.

Until tomorrow,

Gil Stieglitz
